A polo shirt should not be complicated. But between poor fabric weight, uneven collars, and cheap plackets, most polos on the market fail one of three tests within a wash cycle. Here's what to look for — and how to spot the difference.
Test 1: Fabric Weight
Look at the label or ask the brand. Anything under 180gsm is too thin: it clings when it's hot, wrinkles fast, and shows the outline of everything underneath. 200–220gsm is where a polo starts to drape properly. UNDC's Monochrome Polo is cut in premium heavyweight cotton.
Test 2: The Collar
Fold the collar in your hand. It should have structure — a soft resistance, not a floppy softness. A collar with no body will sit wrong the entire day; a collar over-fused with stiffener will look like a rental. The middle ground is where good polos live.
Test 3: The Placket
The strip of fabric where the buttons live. On a cheap polo, it's a single layer, prone to curling. On a good polo, it's reinforced — lies flat, holds its shape, doesn't flap open.
Screenprint vs Embroidered
Screenprint is clean, graphic, everyday. Embroidered is textured, quiet, and reads more elevated up close — the version that translates to dinner and business-casual. UNDC offers both.
Fit
A good polo skims the body without pulling. The shoulder seam should sit exactly at your shoulder point — not halfway down the arm. Length should reach the base of your zipper on trousers; too short reads sporty, too long reads borrowed.
Colour
Buy black first — it goes with everything. White second, for warm weather and everything from denim to tailoring. UNDC ships both — Black and Blanc.
